Travis - a Sharpei was purchased from a purebred breeder by a friend of mine. Since his purchase, my friend has become aware of the thousands of purebred dogs that end up in shelters each year due to over breeding, including dogs of Travis' breed. Recent statistics estimate close to 30% or more of all dogs now in shelters are purebred.
If you are interested in a specific breed, check with your local shelter first, surf the Internet for purebred rescue groups, and support those dogs which are in need of homes, vs. purchasing a dog from a pet shop or non-reputable breeder. And PLEASE leave the breeding to the experts, and have your pet spayed or neutered. We don't need to contribute to the problem by breeding your pet!
