Scamus was a redbone coon hound rescued from a "high kill" animal shelter in Northern Georgia. He was heartworm positive, extremely run down, malnourished and full of hundreds of buckshot. He was about to be euthanized when a friend associated with another hound rescue group notified me of his situation. I agreed to take him and have him live with me to help him gain his health back. The experience of this dog was like no other that has ever touched my life. Inside his wet outdoor kennel, his eyes stayed steady on mine, and he burnt a hole through my heart instantly. He endured incredible pain in his very short life. His death was a result of neglect, abuse, disease and abandonment. His "will to survive", to accept the love of a stranger, to trust once again, proved that he was a noble soul and brave saint. Sadly, on April 1, 1999, he passed on to a painless place. Scamus knew many things that most humans could never know, and finally in the end, he experienced the love of someone who cared for him for 52 days. Scamus was the first dog I painted, who inspired me to pursue "Art with a Conscience". He and Kenne Boy are my poster children, and their abuse and experiences are used to educate others, and help raise funds and awareness to ensure others do not endure the same pain as they had in their short lives.
