Premarine Foals
The painting featuring two premarine foals carries an important and disturbing messages regarding the cruelty which exists to manufacture a drug by Pharmaceutical companies as supplement or used in conjunction with estrogen products to help woman in menopause. Premarine stands for Pregnant Mares' Urine (PREgnant MARes' urINE); PMU for short. As you can see from the name, this drug is extracted from pregnant horse urine. There are more than five hundred PMU farms in North America and Canada. In the US, there are farms located in North Dakota and some on the edge of the Canadian border. The concerns from animal rights supporters is as millions of "Baby Boomers" reach menopausal age it is estimated (by the Humane Society) that these farms will increase dramatically.

Since urine is collected only from pregnant mares, they are artificially inseminated during six of their eleven-month pregnancies. A rubber funnel is positioned between the mares' rump and tail to collect the urine as they are held for days in place by overhead supports and body harnesses. Throughout this six-month period the mares are held in intensive confinement in tiny stalls with metal bars on three sides. They are tethered short, preventing from moving around or lying down.

They are given half the amount of water a horse normally drinks so that the urine is more estrogen enriched. The collection harness restricts movement and causes abrasions. They have inadequate light and sanitation, and receive no grooming or physical care, or little vet care.

And to make their cruelty worse, upon the birth of their foals, they are sent out to have their babies in open pastures, sometimes in the harshness of the elements, some perish while others are only allowed to stay with their traumatized and underfed mothers for a few months. The foals are sent directly to slaughter or unsheltered feedlots to gain weight before being sent to slaughter for meat production for human consumption in Europe, Japan and Mexico. And, American Airlines is one of the largest carriers of frozen horsemeat. Young foal meat is very much in demand since according to the USDA it is much more tender. The mothers are led back to the stalls and re-inseminated. Some of these mares can be used up to 20 years. It is estimated that there are between 50,000 and 75,000 mares giving birth annually at the PMU farms. This drug has been marked for more than 50 years and is currently prescribed to more than 9,000,000 American Woman.

The inhumane treatment of pregnant and foals is yet another example of the unnecessary suffering of animals when there are non-animal treatments on the market. There are at least seven plant based and four synthetic based estrogen replacements drugs that are available. An estimated 1.5 million will experience the first symptoms of menopause this year and 650,000 women will undergo the removal of the uterus, usually associated with the removal of the ovaries.

As a woman who has been there, we can make conscious choices to investigate alternatives, and engage in dialogue with our doctors on hormone replacement therapy. As woman, we CAN insist on the use of other HRT drugs besides Premarin! If enough women become aware of the source of Premarin demand will go down. When demand goes down the PMU farm operators will no longer find it economically feasible to torture these mares and foals.
