Motswari
Pink Elephant -South Africa
This
fellow was photographed during his daily washing frenzy in a small
pool of water in Motswari a game park in Africa. I was not only
able to photograph him with his reflection, but was able to experience
the magnitude of a large male elephant relieving himself
amazing!
Although he was magnificent, and somewhat intrusive, I decided that
a pink elephant was the most appropriate for this "giant".
There
is so much we can learn from these magnificent creatures. It hurts
my heart to see them in circus, and hear of abuse caused at the
hand of a animal handler for the pleasure of the price of a circus
ticket. And cruelty cases are real! For example, recently, as of
and article in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune on October 22, 2002,
a Circus worker (David A. Creech, 31, of Glendale, Arizona) with
the Sarasota-based Sterling & Reid Bros. Circus was found guilty
of cruelty charges as he was reported by attending patrons &
witnesses who said they say him repeatedly jabbed an elephant in
the leg with an ankus, a pole with a hook at the end of it. Sadly,
his fate was to be fined only $200 for each of his counts of cruelty,
and was discharged and terminated from the events. Consider boycotting
animal events such as circus's and in contrast donate the price
of your ticket to an animal organization who works to rescue, rehabilitate
and preserve these brave and wonderful animals like; The Elephant
Sanctuary in Tennessee. This amazing place was founded in 1995,
and remains the nation's single natural habitat refuge developed
specifically for endangered African and Asian elephants. It operates
on 2,700 acres in Hohenwald, Tennessee 85 miles southwest
of Nashville. For more information, reference their site at: http://www.elephants.com/mission.htm
