Monty, a chestnut gelding, was transported to Lone Star Equine Rescue after being abandoned. The story has it that he was purchased by someone who did not know anything about horses or their care. When the owner found that she could not afford him she gave him up to another horse ranch. By then his physical condition was very serious and he had deteriorated to almost a shell of his former self. He was emaciated and malnourished, without teeth, and with a variety of other health issues. What a outrage since in his younger days he was used as a training horse to teach children to ride. It was said that he was a true gentleman, calm, quiet and gentle. Since he had arthritis in his front legs, he could only be ridden lightly. He was up for adoption as a companion animal only and was sponsored by LSER on their web site for a year. Sadly to say, this wonderful horse passed away on October 27, 2001. In the end, he was on heavy pain killers, and was in much pain. Although it was a very difficult position to be in, LSER board of directors, staff and veterinarians made and equally painful decision to let Monty go. Monty's legacy will live on now that he has become their representative for fundraising activities for LSER. His image was recreated and reproduced on T-shirts, as prints and other products to help them raise money for other abused and neglected horses. This wonderful and noble guy will help many more after his death.
