Homer & Buddy. These two fellows are best of friends. It makes one ponder when adopting or rescuing an animal whether or not having two is a good idea. I believe that animals are no different than humans in that many are much happier with companions of the same or other species. Dog in particular are pack animals. If raised with other dog, when separated they can become quite lonely. Many of the behavior problems people see and complain about are because of this separation from other dogs. Yes, they can get bored too, and when they find ways to occupy themselves that are not pleasing to owners they end up in a shelter. But if you are not up for a multi dog household, trips to dog park or playdates with a friend's dog can be very helpful to keep a lonely puppy happy. As always, consider finding your pal a pet at a local shelter or rescue organization. And dogs that are being fostered frequently are already temperament tested and living with others communally, so there is less "trial time" when introducing them to their new buddy.
