The Great Pyrenees is a very old breed, and has been used for hundreds of years by shepherds and people who retain livestock on farms because they are an expert working breed. Their coats are white and can have varying shades of gray, red (rust), or tan around the face (including a full face mask), ears and sometimes on the body and tail. Despite his regal and majestic appearance, the Great Pyrenees is a keen worker, faithfully guarding his peeps no matter the weather or terrain or time of day or night. With his intelligence, scenting ability and excellent sight, he is an invaluable companion. Bad news is, as dogs like the Pyrs gain popularity, back yard breeders pump out puppies and sell them into the wrong situations. Pyrs are most often bought for their appearance and people don't understand their needs. They certainly may not be the star of the local obedience class, and the breed in general needs to be be exercised daily. As a result they are becoming a fixture in shelters around the country.

Dexter & Lucy (Great Pyrenees & Labrador)

Dexter has only told his true story to Lucy, and much like the loyalty and commitment of Labradors, she's not talking.

Lucy and her big brother have become inseparable companions. Lucy has made sure Dexter has gone from being inexplicably abandoned to being unconditionally loved.

True to Great Pyrenees form, Dexter has immediately taken on the responsibility of watching over his newest little lamb, baby Andrew. Every time he walks past the pack n’ play or bassinet, he checks in to make sure Andrew is okay. When Andrew cries, Dexter comes to see what is wrong. He and Lucy have exceeded their families expectations in their gentleness and acceptance of their new baby into the “pack”. Another wonderful story of two rescue animals adapting and going with the flow, and making this Pittsburgh family "complete".
