Cody - Double D Equine Rescue
One fall day in 1999, a disturbing call was received by a Pennsylvania Rescue organization reporting that 7 horses and 2 llamas were being seized from horrendous conditions. They were on a farm, which was practically abandoned. The Humane Society, in conjunction with area rescue groups went into quick action to arrange for removal of each of the animals. One of its most abused was a horse whose condition was so devastating; it was believed that his chances were seriously low of surviving. Nonetheless he deserved a chance!

A newly formed Equine Rescue organization (Double D Equine Rescue) was notified and agreed to bring the horse in the worst condition to their horse farm. The other horses and llamas were placed in other foster homes around the county. Only 5 years old, the chestnut gelding, estimated to be 300 pounds underweight, blind and having severe wounds on the front of his back right hock was to be named Cody. His wounds were so serious they were affecting his ability to place weight on his legs, so his posture was quite amazing. The infection called "Proud flesh" had taken over, and the wound was jeopardizing his entire body.
On the day of his departure from the hands of a cruel owner, as he was walked to the trailer in pouring rain, his request to his rescuers was gentle, tired and almost releasing, as if he were saying "Just let me go-there's no need to go on in this life". What was even more amazing, even though he was blind, he had no trouble walking onto the trailer, some how knowing that he was being led by an angle out of the debts of hell. As soon as he was boarded, and noticed fresh hay in the trailer, his ears perked up and he seemed to relax into what was now the beginning of something safe.

Once at the rescue farm, he was placed in a dry, clean stall, heavily bedded down with hay (so he wouldn't run out!), two full water buckets (of which he drank them dry without seeming to take a breath), and caressing hands of his loving new foster mother whose touch welcomed and calmed him for the first time maybe in his life. Immediately and within a few hours, was a different horse. His eyes began to gleam, his head lifted, and he answered their calls quite vocally with a whinny as if to say he was so happy to be home! This was just the beginning of a very long and hard struggle for Double D and Cody.......
